Asia Pacific Satellite Industries (Oct 23, 2008)

Asia Pacific Satellite Industries, the World's No. 1 Satellite Mobile Phone Service Provider

Asia Pacific Satellite Industries (APSI) is a mobile satellite phone service provider with over 20 percent market share in the world's mobile satellite telecommunication terminal market.

Founded in June 2000, APSI is the world's no. 1 prospective technology venture firm with 5.07 billion won in capital and 130 staff members (including 115 developers). Boasting a technological prowess that has developed a VSAT solution, satellite phone, mobile satellite phone, base station, satellite antenna, and PMP, ASPI garnered considerable attention as it rose to become the world's no. 1 satellite mobile phone service provider seven years after its foundation, using its own technology.

APSI exceeded 40 billion won in sales in 2007 and expects to reach 50 billion in 2008. As might be expected from a company equipped with world-famous core technology, APSI has an ambitious plan to become a world-class company specializing in satellite telecommunication equipment with sales of a trillion won. Its stocks are already trading for high prices on the over-the-counter-market.

APSI secured its satellite transmission-related core parts and technology when it took charge of the artificial satellite parts and technology development program which the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy (MOCIE) supported with 13.9 billion won for research and development as a mid-term project. APSI's mobile satellite phone, the world's smallest mobile gadget, was named the world's no. 1 product by MOCIE in 2007.

Asia-Pacific Region Services by Global Satellite Telecommunication Provider

In accordance with the agreement with United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Thuraya in April last year, APSI provides a satellite mobile phone service in the whole Asia region and Australia as well as in Korea.

The project is for alienated areas or blind spots in telecommunication in Asia. Thuraya, a Middle East-based multinational satellite telecommunication service provider with several hundreds of thousands of subscribers around the world, launched the telecommunication service for Asian territory.

APSI has been providing mobile satellite phones to Thuraya since 2003, outstripping five of its rivals in the world including the U.S. It supplies 160,000 units a year, which is equivalent to some 70 million USD. Its market share accounts for 20.9 percent, which is the world's second highest after U.S.-based HughesNet.

APSI's CEO Ryoo said, "APSI could be named the satellite telecommunication service provider for Thuraya in Asia, based on the trust it earned supplying mobile phones over four years," adding that the firm, driven by the agreement with Thuraya, plans to make a full scale foray into the satellite telecommunication business.

The global mobile satellite phone market is dominated currently by three or four telecommunication service providers including Thuraya, Global Tech, and Iridum. It is expected to be highly popular when it is out in the market as it does not require roaming between countries, saving expensive roaming fees.

When APSI kicks off its service in the northeast Asian region next year, Korea is likely to enjoy mobile satellite services, which means that communication using a mobile satellite phone is possible in some two thirds of the regions of the world, excluding the U.S.

Competitiveness of APSI

The competitiveness of APSI more or less covers two areas.

Above all, APSI boasts unique technology and global competitiveness.

APSI is equipped with unique satellite telecommunication protocols (SSMA and GMR) and design technology (e.g., modem, etc.). In addition, its prices and technology are highly competitive in the global market, compared to those of its rivals.

Also, APSI's products are competitive in the global market (satellite telecommunication source independently developed).

APSI develops and manufactures the world's smallest mobile satellite phones, with the best performance, at the lowest prices. It is also single-handedly developing core technology critical for the development of mobile satellite phones. Moreover, it is developing the world's first real-time live TV broadcasting system technology for subways and terminals and systems with container cargo tracking and managing systems.

APSI's flagship products include the following:

Satellite devices: mobile satellite phone, phone, satellite telecommunication module, base station, marine satellite antenna, etc.

Two-way satellite system: a satellite-utilizing effective and affordable two-way communication system that allows users to have access to the internet and TV on the go or in blind spots for telecommunication, for business and private purposes.

Real-time live TV broadcasting system for subways and motor vehicles: real-time satellite broadcasting in subways with high picture-quality LCD monitors through the transmission of outdoor satellite broadcasting in real-time and the amplification of signals using a base station.

Multimedia player and mobile device : TV Ubina for terrestrial DMB (available on the market), PMP with multi functions (in the making), GSM mobile phone service (in the making)

GPS module: optimized GPS module performance and size based on experience of GPS parts development for mobile satellite phones.
